Welcome to On Cardamom and Cast Iron. I'm glad you stopped by! This blog is about my adventures in the kitchen--often with my trusty cast iron skillet on the stove and a cup of cardamom-scented coffee in hand--and occasionally about my life. I currently live in northern Virginia with my husband and two kids, and our fine furry feline friends. (How's that for alliteration?) I currently write, volunteer, and homeschool our kids. It's a busy life, but I love it.
I'm obsessed with good, real food--whether that means a pot of heirloom beans, a fresh green salad, or a platter of pastured pork carnitas. I support local farmers whenever possible, and try to buy only ethically-sourced animal ingredients. I'm not perfect, but these things are especially important to me. As for the rest of my food? Organic and local when possible, but I don't worry too much. Life's too short to obsess over the particulars.
A little about the recipes and food you'll find here:
Everything on this blog after about January of 2011 is gluten-free. My food is generally dairy-free as well, except for a few recipes in the archives. I've labeled all of the recipes in my recipe index appropriately, with the gluten-filled recipes down at the bottom of the page.
I test recipes for several cookbook authors, and have a fairly extensive collection of cookbooks, so I tend to feature some of those recipes as well. I do not re-post their recipes, however, unless I've made extensive modifications (in which case I'll give credit where credit is due) or gotten express permission. It's just polite. Go buy the book or check it out at your local library!
Oh, and PS- You can find the recipe to my award-winning no-knead Swedish cardamom braid here. (Sadly, it's not gluten-free.)
You can email me with any questions or comments at cardamomandcastiron {at} gmail {dot} com or find me on Facebook.
